Interview with Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Architecture should be change Soft, Light and Moving. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : This work is a first Zipper Architecture in the world. We considered how architecture can move and what is influenced by moving. So We focus on window. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : This moment is the first time to award in foreign country. We want to be known by lots of people. So we would like to become a bridge between abroad and Japan for young generation designer. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : This work is the third prototype based on this idea. First of all works got 1st prize of furniture competition judged by Toyo Ito,2007. The second work is booth design which got DSA award that is one of most prestigious prize of space design in Japan,2012. This work takes 2months to solve problems, and 1month to make it. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : I believe this idea is suitable for 21st architecture concept. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : We pleased to talk with them. And we will develop the work together. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : I think architect should challenge for experiment. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Japanese traditional house is useful. For example, Fusuma, Shoji. Because when I was childhood, I used them to make a own room or party room for parents. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : At first we have to think about that can zipper be used for architecture. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Not only big kaleidoscope but also making a kaleidoscope changing by the movement of the person. It means the space has like a emotion. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : The panels could be always opened and closed, So it seems like a "WINK". .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : computation:Rhino and grasshopper Manual: laser-cut .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : To use zipper for creating a scpace .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : We should think all of them from start point. but many sponsor contribute material for this work. we appreciate them. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : To make a new culture. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Origami which is traditional play in Japan is useful. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Until now, the zipper has been developed for a soft cloth. However, by using the new technology such as laser-cut and computation design. I've managed to connect with hard planes to each other. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : We want to work world wide and know people who has different culture each other. Italy is one of most prestigeous country about design. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : Vision and Dream is super important. If we think about only technical things, the work was not realized. .Frank Scott: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?. Masakazu Shirane + Saya Miyazaki : I could answer everything! .
