At Design Interviews

Interview with Johann Sigmarsson : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Johann Sigmarsson : The bed I designed. It's no screws in it. You can puzzle it together in two minutes. I wanted to do a similar desk, but it was more complicated. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Johann Sigmarsson : I just wanted a desk a beautiful item I could be proud of, my own desk. I didn't expected to be awarded internationally for it. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Johann Sigmarsson : I really don't know. The whole thing is so new for me, but it's going to be a part of some exhibitions. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Johann Sigmarsson : It have been going on for two years with pauses. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Johann Sigmarsson : In the beginning I had no clue that I could design, create and built furniture. It surprised me and other people that know me well. The idea for the Equator Memorial Project had its genesis in a bed I designed and made in 2011. Friends and acquaintances showed immediate interest and I was soon commissioned to make another one as a wedding anniversary gift. I went on to build shelves, an armchair with leather seats, and a desk with leather trimmings. Word got around about my furniture making and eventually a small group of people began to form around the current project. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Johann Sigmarsson : I have produce few myself, but the intention are to exhibit it with some other art pieces. If I get some good offers I can't say no, or can I? .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Johann Sigmarsson : No. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Johann Sigmarsson : Its more collectable pieces in very limited amount, but some collectors and companies have bought the pieces. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Johann Sigmarsson : I think it's the wood from the harbor. It gives the piece more character and a bit of romance. It's beautiful to see the old holes from the bolts and the oil from the ships harmonizing together. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Johann Sigmarsson : The idea comes from a famous winner race horse named Somethingroyal. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Johann Sigmarsson : Freehand and photoshop, then I was designing it while I did the prototype. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Johann Sigmarsson : I'm always learning. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Johann Sigmarsson : I was doing it at three studio on that time. It was a company which did the leather and colored it after my order, but I upholstered it. It was another company which was cutting the glass and the third company drilled out the stone knobs after my sketch. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Johann Sigmarsson : I sketched it up and finished the design in two prototypes in 2012 and 2013. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Johann Sigmarsson : I watched my bed I had design and wanted to do some design like it, but the design on the bed is influenced by (semi) Japanese bed I had once. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Johann Sigmarsson : Everything in life has challenge which you have to overcome, accept or leave. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Johann Sigmarsson : I was just looking on google and decided to take a part. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. Johann Sigmarsson : That I can do it. .Frank Scott: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?. Johann Sigmarsson : That's fine. .
